Peacefully on Wednesday, November 12, 2014,at Sprucedale Care Centre, Strathroy Ulbe (Elmer) Winia formerly of Newbury passed away in his 84th year. He will now be joined in heaven with his beautiful angel Gloria who passed away last December. To know him was to love him. He had a passion for the outdoors and passed the lumberjack legacy down to his 3 boys. Elmer spent many years with the Ministry of Natural Resources in Rondeau Provincial Park where he was a maintenance mechanic. He brought his family to Canada from Holland when he was just a teenager by working in the lumber camps in Northern Ontario. Elmer liked to work on small engines, teach his boys how to cut down trees, teach his girls how to cut asparagus & pick cucumbers, planted the most fruitful vegetable gardens and was a devoted husband, Dad & Granddad to his many grandchildren & great – grandchildren. Elmer will be dearly missed but never forgotten by his children Julien (Gail) Winia, Strathroy, late Mike (Michelle) Winia, Ted (Debi) Winia, Glencoe, Gloria Van Rycheghem, Thamesville, Tammy (Michael) McDade, Portland Maine, Rosie (Mark) Van Rycheghem, Kent Bridge, and Wendy (Tim) McCallum, Glencoe. You will never be forgotten by your numerous grandchildren & great grandchildren. Also survived his brothers and sisters, Minne (Ann) of Holland, Simon (Alda) of Nova Scotia, Theresa (Roelof) of Fergus, Pietje (Lorne)of Wardsville, Jane (late John) of London and Hilda of Wardsville. Predeceased by 2 sisters Gertie and Ann. Visitation at the Van Heck Funeral Home, 172 Symes st. Glencoe on Friday from 2-4 & 7-9 p.m. where the funeral service will be held on Saturday November 15 at 11am. Interment to follow at Oakland Cemetery. Memorial donations may be made to Parkinson’s Foundation.
